Inland Rivers Ports and Terminals Mission Statement:



IRPT is the trade association for the nation’s inland waterway, port and terminal professionals.



Our Mission:
  1. To provide opportunity and a platform for inland river port and terminal professionals to improve their businesses through networking and developing key strategic alliances and
  2. To inform policy makers on the needs and economic impacts of our industry.
Goals & Objectives:
  • Promote the healthy growth and operation of inland river
  • ports, terminals and intermodal centers which contribute to
  • a more efficient national freight transportation system.
  • Promote foreign and domestic commerce, economic
  • development and job creation throughout the inland
  • waterway system.
  • Promote river- and port-related commercial and industrial development throughout the inland waterway system.
  • Educate policy makers and the general public on the
  • environmental and economic advantages of the inland
  • rivers, ports and terminals.
  • Effectively market the national inland waterway system to encourage:
      New and existing business opportunities;
      A viable solution to the freight transportation crisis;
      A means for providing IRPT members with a sustained competitive advantage.
  • Encourage continuing cooperation with associated marine, economic development and trade organizations while concurrently refining our own differentiating role.
Benefits to Members:
  • IRPT provides a national perspective on federal legislative and policy issues affecting ports and terminals through position statements.
  • IRPT keeps members abreast of technical, operational, economic and security issues affecting U.S. inland ports, terminals and river systems.
  • IRPT promotes and markets the inland waterway system including ports, terminals and intermodal centers.
  • IRPT unifies the inland ports, terminals and river systems in support of common objectives.
Action Items:
  • Request that the Maritime Administration:
      Update the Mercer Report;
      Update the Environmental Impact Study;
      Update the economic impact model for inland River ports.
  • Complete the inland river marketing strategy to meet the requirements of the contract between the USDOT/Maritime Administration and IRPT and subsequently seek Additional funding for implementation.
  • Determine the interest of IRPT members in developing an appropriate data base of inland port facilities and associated services.
  • Identify member trade associations in key commodity business sectors to speak about current trends in their respective industries at select IRPT venues to discuss:
      Trends
      Liaisons
      Network opportunities for members
  • Determine feasibility of developing a key commodity data base for its members.
  • Develop an IRPT speakers’ bureau to speak at annual meetings of associations representing key commodity business sectors (i.e., Grain & Feed, Iron & Steel, Freight Forwarders, Steamship Lines, etc.).
  • Explore (additional) marketing opportunities for international trade.
  • Develop and promote meaningful performance measures for the evaluation of navigable river system segments and harbors for the Corps of Engineers and the Office of Management and Budget.
  • Regularly update policy statements.
