Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, you will be part of a team responsible for leadership within Canada.

This  role comprises the management and development of staff in an assigned section focusing on large infrastructure projects and work working with other people managers to appropriately staff projects, projects and distribute work between offices as needed.

This position includes a secondary role contributing specialized technical or project management capabilities to the team. As an Associate Director, you will  provide high levelhigh-level, senior expertise to projects and develop strategic initiatives to improve the Company's practices. You contribute to the identification, recruitment, and development of talent for the COWI.

Responsibilities include:
People Management

  • Provides leadership and guidance to assigned staff, including:
    • Providing feedback, coaching, conducting annual performance evaluations
    • Supporting the professional development of staff and help staff find opportunities for development
    • Ensuring assigned staff are effectively engaged on projects, defining and following up on staff performance targets.
  • Contributes to the development, improvement, and implementation of the corporate policies
  • Work with senior leadership to develop a clear vision and strategy for the section and effectively communicate that vision/strategy to the section
  • Participates in periodic strategy meetings and contributes to development and achievement of the COWI Group’s strategic priorities
  • Provides leadership in business development and developing relationships with key clients
  • Is an ambassador of COWI Values

Associate Technical Director

  • Performs tasks on projects requiring a broad and deep knowledge in a field of expertise related to large infrastructure engineering
  • Develops and implements design best practices in areas of expertise, including the development and implementation of Action Plans
  • Develops technical networks outside of COWI, including participation in technical conferences, publishing and presenting technical papers
  • Delivers  projects (or an equivalent portfolio of projects) with fees typically up to $5M, requiring 10-25 staff, complex multi-disciplinary projects and framework agreements
  • Carries out project management responsibilities in accordance with the Company Quality Management System including, but not be limited to project scheduling, resource management, project budget controls, and client sub-contractor management and interfacing
  • Leads project teams and manages the contract and client to ensure profitability and other targets are met

To do well in this position, we believe that you are a demonstrated and recognized technical leader in the industry who actively participates in the National and International professional societies and has strong organizational and time management skills together with excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills. You'll also pursue new insights and constantly explore new ways to improve while respecting our clients, your colleagues, the local community, and the planet we live on.

  • Degree in structural engineering or civil engineering and P.Eng. designation in BC. Licenses in other provinces or US states an asset
  • 10+ years previous direct people management experience related to engineering, project management and business development experience with an emphasis on design, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of bridge or tunnel structures
  • Demonstrated and recognized technical leader in the industry, participation in National and International professional societies
  • Experience and reputation with local clients such as various government organizations, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, local municipalities, and Design-Build partners
