GHD has an excellent opportunity for a Civil Estimator with work located throughout the MidWest.

Construction estimating and costing all plans, review all project plans and specification, Identify cost savings techniques, assemble complete and detailed estimating packages, prepare conceptual or budgetary estimates, coordinate, review and analyze general contractor and subcontractor bids.

  • Part of the team to provide preconstruction services to our clients.  This includes developing a bid strategy, leading, and executing the entire bid process for both negotiated bids and hard bids
  • Review owner plans and specifications to develop a comprehensive understanding of the project; develop plan for the actual construction to serve as basis for the estimate
  • Conduct site investigation prior to forming a plan of operations to identify any problems or conditions of an unusual nature that may be present
  • Coordinate a team of Estimators’ activities, review and approval of estimates, records maintenance, and provide guidance to team members
  • Support the development of conceptual estimates, technical proposals on design-built lump sum, construction management and conceptual estimating project
  • Use detailed construction analysis and historical costs to develop schedules and prepare comprehensive cost estimates to perform the work
  • Establish and maintain budget control during Estimating/Precon phases of the project
  • Analyze, review and interpret engineering contracts, plans and specifications to develop detailed, comprehensive construction estimates for large, complex infrastructure projects
  • Play a critical role in assisting tender evaluations and present and defend the estimated to Senior Management
  • Prepare written proposals and provide value engineering solutions including cost/schedule implications
  • Assist Project team in design decisions and development of solutions and represent company to subcontractors through management of the estimating process, including solicitation of bids and constructability input
  • Coordinate bid efforts, processing RFI's, and interfacing between bidding community and design team members on negotiated projects
  • Assist in the development and training of other estimating staff and work with the Marketing department in preparation of responses to RFP's and RFQ's
  • Manage dealings with subcontracts, subcontractors and/or self-perform work
  • Execute daily quantity takeoffs
  • Close out estimates
  • Perform all other job-related duties as requested by your supervisor


  • Degree in Engineering with an emphasis in Civil, Mechanical or Construction Management is preferred, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of construction experience with at least 5 years in estimating
  • Ideally have exposure to multiple facets of Engineering
  • Knowledge of lump sum, unit price, construction management and conceptual estimating projects
  • Familiar with computerized estimating system
  • Exposure to Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, etc.), AutoCAD, Trimble, HCSS Estimating and Management Software or comparable
  • Understanding of CPM Scheduling
  • Knowledge of construction, with ability to read plans and specifications
  • Be able to conceptually visualize the general intent on incomplete drawings and be able to offer value engineering alternates
  • Candidates must possess a strong work ethic; good interpersonal skills; demonstrate good organization, verbal and written communication skills; excellent leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently but also be part of team pulling complex technical project estimates together
  • Good attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies
  • Results oriented individual with the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, maintaining a comprehensive understanding of departmental design standards, applicable engineering codes, and guidelines, providing suggestions and recommendations as needed
  • Work as a part of a large project team including both in-house inter-discipline engineers and construction superintendents to provide clients the industry’s best of both engineering, procurement, and construction
  • Must be willing to relocate to the greater Plainwell, Michigan area or be able to work out of 1 of our other offices
