Drafting and Mapping Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Engineering Services Department

Job Summary

This is skilled technical work in drafting and execution of standardized designs using computer aided design and drafting software and equipment. An employee in this class prepares clear and accurate working plans and detailed drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes for varied engineering, surveying, mapping, and other purposes.  Work requires knowledge of engineering practices and mathematics, as well as knowledge of various public works or utilities facilities and structural materials.  Work includes supervision of other drafting personnel.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed drafting of utilities, mechanical and structural layouts; computes and drafts work involved in checking and reducing field survey notes, calculating distances, angles, and areas.
  • Prepares various drawings from field notes; reduces field notes; plots and checks center lines and cross sections; uses planimeter or other tools to make engineering measurements, and makes less technical computations.
  • Makes or corrects topographic maps from aerial photos; plots contour lines, transfers parts of entire topographic drawing to the same or different scales.
  • Prepares drawings from written descriptions and maintains orderly files of completed drawings; plots field information on plan and profile drawings.
  • Prepares and maintains necessary maps, records and logs of Port facilities, infrastructure, leases, etc.; supplies engineers, surveyors, contractors; property lessees and the general public with requested information.
  • Performs related work as required.

 Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent, supplemented by college-level courses in engineering and technical drafting.
  • One to two years’ college or trade school education in mechanical drawing and related areas is helpful.
  • Well-rounded, practical experience may be substituted for formal training.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in engineering drafting.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of engineering drafting.
  • Considerable knowledge of mathematics through the level of trigonometry.
  • Considerable knowledge of land surveying principles and practices.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform construction inspections of civil works.
  • Knowledge of construction specifications for civil works.
  • Ability to accurately make the less complex engineering computations.
  • Ability to read and interpret deeds and Metes & Bounds descriptions.
  • Ability to read and plot field notes.
  • Ability to make accurate, neat, and legible drawings.
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Skilled in the use of all types of drafting instruments.
  • Skilled in the use of AutoCAD and/or similar drafting software.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (English / Spanish).
  • Skilled in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and publishing software, such as Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.

 Work Conditions & Physical Demands

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Occasional exposure to outside weather conditions such as heat, cold, dust, and vehicle exhaust.
  • Medium physical effort including long periods of standing, up to 8 continuous hours and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Withstand prolonged periods of standing, walking, and/or sitting.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position.
