The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District is seeking bids for a dredging project entitled, Herring Bay & Rockhold Creek Maintenance Dredging, Anne Arundel County, MD. Material will be placed upland at an existing placement site approximately 3.5 miles from the furthest location of the dredging.
Shoaling in the Herring Bay & Rockhold Creek federal navigation channel has reduced the depth of the channel to below the Congressionally Authorized Depth. This causes a hazard to navigation as well as a lack of access to vessels attempting to use the federal channel.
The project provides for a channel 7 feet deep and 60 feet wide from the 7-foot contour in Herring Bay to the vicinity of the county wharf on Herring Bay & Rockhold Creek, with a turning basin of the same depth, 100 feet wide and 150 feet long at the head of the channel, and stone breakwaters approximately 900 feet long on both sides of the entrance channel. The project length is 7,300 feet. The material dredged from Herring Bay & Rockhold Creek will be placed in an existing upland placement site that is owned and operated by Anne Arundel County, the non-federal sponsor.
The scope includes using a hydraulic cutterhead pipeline dredge at Herring Bay & Rockhold Creek to remove material to its authorized depth of 7 feet (plus two feet of allowable overdepth). Additional advanced maintenance (one additional foot) may be needed near the beginning of the channel near the existing jetties. Approximately 38,000 cubic yards of silty to sandy material are to be dredged. Placement of material via pipeline will be utilized. Pipeline distance will be approximately 3.5 miles for the furthest dredging location. The pipeline will travel through the Herring Bay & Rockhold Creek, up Rockhold Creek, and over tidal wetlands to reach the existing upland placement site. Earthwork berm repairs, including possibly raising of the existing berms, and weir box replacement may be needed at the existing placement site.
