The Manager of Vessel Operations is responsible for overseeing operations of all CTC Linehaul Vessels, Harbor Vessels, Vessel Crewing & Fleeting Operations for River Operations. Responsibilities include budgeting, forecasting, and overseeing the coordination and communication between the Vessel Operations Personnel and Logistics, Compliance, Purchasing, Accounting, Maintenance, and shoreside management.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Promote and uphold CTC’s 5 Core Values within designated areas of responsibility.
  • Monitor and enforce safe work practices among vessel crews, providing feedback for work practices and performance improvement.
  • Identify and rectify unsafe practices during operations.
  • Ensure compliance of vessel crews with company TSMS policies, procedures, and USCG Sub-chapter M regulations.
  • Establish and oversee daily vessel productivity metrics, identifying opportunities for enhancement.
  • Collaborate with Port Captains, vessel crews, and Logistics to determine optimal vessel operating areas and tow sizes.
  • Coordinate with Vessel Operations and Crewing personnel to assign appropriate crew for optimal operating conditions.
  • Assist Port Captains and vessel crew in audit preparation and implementing identified improvements.
  • Supervise Port Captains overseeing Port Mates, Fleet Mates, and vessel crews' day-to-day activities.
  • Manage and monitor vessel stores and supplies costs in collaboration with Port Captains, Purchasing Department, Port Mates, and Fleet Mates.
  • Coordinate with Safety and Training Departments, Port Captains, and Crewing Coordinators to ensure proper training for all CTC vessel employees.
  • Collaborate with Director of Compliance to investigate accidents or injuries, developing corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement of CTC’s safety culture.
  • Oversee and develop yearly forecasts and budgets in collaboration with Vessel Maintenance Team to maintain equipment standards.
  • Conduct routine visits to all CTC operating vessels as per schedule to be determined with VP of Operations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in maritime operations or the inland towing industry, with a strong understanding of vessel operations, safety regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and implementing USCG Sub-chapter M regulations and company TSMS policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and monitor productivity metrics, analyze data, and identify areas for improvement.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate safety protocols and provide feedback to personnel.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with experience in supervising and coordinating activities of multiple teams.
  • Proven track record in budget management, forecasting, and cost control within a maritime or similar operational environment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and protocols, with experience in accident investigation and corrective action development.
  • Experience in conducting employee training on safety protocols and operational guidelines, including program policies and procedures.
  • Ability to travel and conduct routine vessel visits as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Maritime studies, Business Administration, or related field is acceptable.
  • Current USCG Master of Towing License with Towing Endorsement preferred.
  • Ability to maintain USCG License, TWIC, Radar endorsement, and FCC Radio Operator’s Permit.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a towing vessel captain on the Ohio River system is preferred.
  • Familiarity with vessel maintenance practices and equipment standards is a plus.

Physical Capabilities:

  • Carry, push, pull or move 10 pounds regularly, or up to 20 pounds occasionally.
  • Traverse boats, barges, and tows as needed.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test and submit to random DOT testing requirements if applicable.
  • Must meet USCG physical examination requirements and/or pass pre-employment physical.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
