The MKARNS itself officially turns 50 on June 5th, 2021. In the five decades since it went into service, this marine highway in eastern Oklahoma has provided a direct shipping route by barge to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, generating billions in commerce while also producing flood control and recreational opportunities along its rivers.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation will host a virtual media briefing on Friday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. featuring officials from the Tulsa District of the U.S. Corps of Engineers and MKARNS port operators. This online event will provide information about the value of the MKARNS to Oklahoma’s economy and more about the ongoing celebrations.
Scheduled speakers include Oklahoma Secretary of Transportation and ODOT Executive Director Tim Gatz, Chairman of the Board for the Tulsa Port Authority and former Mayor for the City of Tulsa Dewey Bartlett, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commander and District Engineer Lt. Colonel Scott Preston.
