POSITION: Naval Architect

REPORTS TO: VP of Engineering

 

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Supports all aspects of New Product Development, Existing Product Design & Documentation Maintenance, and Applications Engineering. Manages CAD system to produce clear and technically accurate drawings based on design specifications. Participates in the development of new designs and the improvement of existing designs. Supports Production team and provides leadership and decision-making regarding manufacturability and process improvement. Evaluates project inquiries by matching appropriate Heartland Fabrication, LLC equipment for the application; or by identifying opportunities for new or custom equipment to suit a specific need.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Participate in the development of new designs and the improvement of existing designs.

· Execute drawing check and the release process checklist consistently and accurately.

· Produce analysis, calculations, and reports to evaluate adequacy of proposed HLF products for specific marine construction project applications.

· Provide CAD layouts for standard and custom barge platforms and related accessories.

· Provide stability analysis using an in-house barge stability evaluation program; create, file, and deliver reports to Sales staff and external customers.

· Occasionally perform detailed weight & balance, and structural analysis of platform layouts for unique or particularly demanding applications.

· As directed, applies selected techniques and procedures to assignments involving ship design and ship performance analyses.

· Independently directs and technically manages engineering and design activities under the guidance of the VP of Engineering and is responsible for tracking progress and technical adequacy of the design solution.

· Schedule, prepare and lead design review meetings for new products and design changes to existing products; explain important aspects of the design, manufacturability concerns, and seek input from Manufacturing personnel and other departments for design decisions.

· Provide leadership and analytical decision-making regarding manufacturability and process improvement.

· Be regularly present on the manufacturing shop floor, to assess and support the build, answer questions, ensure the build matches the design intent.

· Interact and build relationships with Operations personnel to gather input and insight on challenges they face in building the product more safely, efficiently and to the design intent.

· Bring ideas for design improvement into new and existing product designs.

 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications:

· Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from an ABET-accredited program

 

· Fluent in writing and speaking English language.

Strong communication skills, written and oral. Able to communicate effectively with non-technical personnel.

· Positive Attitude and Strong Work Ethic

· Strong Computer Skills, MS Windows File structures, 2D & 3D CAD modeling

· Strong Planning and Organizing skills, with ability to prioritize based on Project completion schedules.

Desired Qualifications:

· Proficient and experienced with Autodesk Inventor CAD systems

· Experience in creating complete drawing packages including assemblies and component parts, parts lists, BOM’s.

· Experience in Metal Fabrication tools and techniques

· Weld specification and weld symbol literacy

· AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code exposure and knowledge

· Exposure to Commercial Marine Industry, especially barges, construction equipment, and related.

· Experience with 3D Printing and Rapid Prototype development
