NOTICE TO MARINERS
LOWER MISSISSIPPI RIVER

LNM 05-22

SECTION VII – GENERAL

This section contains information of general concern to the Mariners. Mariners are advised to use caution while transiting these areas.

 

LA - SOUTHWEST PASS - MISSISSIPPI RIVER - Dredge Operation

Commencing February 15, 2022 and continuing until approximately October 1, 2022, Dredge TERRAPIN ISLAND will conduct maintenance dredging throughout areas of the Mississippi River as assigned by USACE. It is anticipated that work will begin and remain south of Venice, LA., however, additional dredging regions may be provided as determined by USACE. Operations will be conducted 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. The enclosed depicts both the potential dig and disposal areas for Mile 13.5, AHOP to Mile -22.2, BHOP. Dredge TERRAPIN ISLAND and M/V SUN RAY will monitor VHF-FM Channels 13 and 16. Mariners are urged to use extreme caution in the area. For dredging and placement operations, mariners are urged to transit at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made.

 

LA - MISSISSIPPI RIVER, MILE 53.0, AHOP TO MILE 55.0, AHOP - Excavating Operations

Continuing until approximately April 30, 2023, Weeks Marine is conducting excavating operations. Crane Barges 532, 752, 571 and MCC 4600 are operating along the RDB, of the Lower Mississippi River, between Mile 53.0, AHOP and Mile 55.0, AHOP. Work limits will be bound by the following approximate positions:

  • 29-36-38.28N 089-53-32.05W,
  • 29-36-43.77N 089-53-29.15W,
  • 29-36-26.96N 089-52-44.98W,
  • 29-36-18.79N 089-52-16.06W,
  • 29-36-12.58N 089-52-17.82W and
  • 29-36-20.23N 089-52-46.80W.

All excavated material will be towed and offloaded at an approved location per contract plans and specifications. Work will be performed Monday through Saturday, during daylight hours, from 6:00 a.m., until 7:00 p.m. Barges and equipment will have all required U.S. Coast Guard lighting, for night operations. Crane barges will monitor VHF-FM Channels 13 and 16. Mariners are urged to use extreme caution and transit the area at their slowest safe speed to create minimum wake after passing arrangements have been made.

 

LA - MISSISSIPPI RIVER, MILE 107.0, AHOP - Dredge Operation

Continuing through February 20, 2022, dredging operations are being conducted along the Lower Mississippi River at the Wood Materials Harahan pit facility, located at Mile 107.0, AHOP, LDB. The Dredge W.B. WOOD and Tender MR. KELLY, will monitor VHF-FM Channel 67 or 71. Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake and exercise caution when transiting the area. LA - BATON ROUGE HARBOR - Dredge Operation – UPDATE

Dredge CAPTAIN FRANK has completed dredging operations between approximate positions 30-31-22.19N 091-12-29.19W and 30-33-24.40N 091- 13-08.51W. Demobilization will occur until approximately February 8, 2022. The dredge and tugs will monitor VHF-FM Channels 13 and 16. Mariners are urged to use extreme caution and transit the area at their slowest safe speed to create minimum wake after passing arrangements have been made.

 

MILE 234.0 - DREDGE OPERATION – UPDATE

The U.S. Government Contract Dredge CAPTAIN FRANK has completed dredging operations in the vicinity of Mile 234.0, Baton Rouge Harbor. Demobilization operations will continue until approximately February 8, 2022. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

 

MILE 183.2 - BRIDGE REMOVAL

Merchants Railroad Bridge; To facilitate removal of the center span of the Merchants Railroad Bridge, blockage of the main navigation channel is required. A 10-hour blockage of the main navigation channel is scheduled to start at 6:00 a.m., February 22, 2022, for this evolution, with up to a 24-hour closure of the middle span. To float-in the new center span, another 12-hour blockage of the main navigation span will be required starting at 6:00 a.m., February 23, 2022, with up to a 24-hour closure of the middle span. These dates are dependent upon weather and river conditions encountered between now and the dates noted.

 

MILE 109.9 - DRILLING OPERATION

Chester Bridge; Drilling operations are being conducted in the vicinity of Mile 109.9, Chester Bridge. Work will be conducted from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. A drilling platform is moored partially in the navigation channel. The Tug SHAWN DAWSY is on-scene to coordinate vessel passage. Mariners are requested to contact the Tug SHAWN DAWSY via VHF-FM Channel 7 or 13, or the vessel captain at (608) 723-8013, 30-minutes prior to arrival, for passing arrangements. Mariners are requested to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made.
