SECTION VII – GENERAL

This section contains information of general concern to the Mariners. Mariners are advised to use caution while transiting these areas.

BIG SANDY RIVER

MILE 0.9 - AERIAL LINE REPLACEMENT

On May 10, 2022, from 8:00 a.m. until noon, aerial line crossing replacement operations will be conducted in the vicinity of Mile 0.9.  Vessel traffic will not be impeded.  Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

 

KANAWHA RIVER

KANAWHA RIVER MILE 41.7 - BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION – UPDATE

Donald M. Legg Bridge;  There will be a full river blockage for the erection of the main span girders, from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., May 11, 2022 and again from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., May 12, 2022.  Mariners can contact the M/V Mark A., via VHF-FM Channel 16, for additional information. 

 

OHIO RIVER

MILE 595.9 - MILE 604.3 - MARINE EVENT/SPECIAL LOCAL REGULATION/RIVER CLOSURE

On May 4, 2022, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., The Great Steamboat Race will be held between approximate Miles 595.9 and 604.3.  The COTP Ohio Valley has established a Special Local Regulation closing the river for this event.  Vessels are prohibited from transiting this area during the event period, unless specifically authorized by the COTP Ohio Valley..  Mariners may contact the event sponsor at (502) 817-4565, for additional information.

MILE 846.0 - L/D CLOSURE

Commencing 6:00 a.m., May 9, 2022 and continuing until 6:00 p.m., May 20, 2022, the John T. Myers L/D (600-foot auxiliary chamber) in the vicinity of Mile 846.0, will be closed.  During this closure, all traffic will be passed through the 1,200-foot main chamber.

MILE 964.6 - L/D RESTRICTIONS/DIVE OPERATIONS – UPDATE

Continuing until May 6, 2022, from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., each day, vessel traffic will utilize the lock chambers at the Olmsted L/D, in the vicinity of Mile 964.6, to facilitate dive operations on the wickets.  Upon completion of dive operations, the navigation pass will reopen to traffic.  All mariners shall take direction from the Olmsted L/D Control Tower.  Tow sizes through the lock chambers are:  Down-bound tow maximum dimensions are 108 feet by 1,200 feet, including the towboat, with no more than 15 regulation barges and not to exceed 3 wide.  No hip barges or other deviation that could degrade normal steerage characteristics are allowed for down-bound tows.  Up-bound tow maximum dimensions are 108 feet by 1,200 feet including the towboat, with no more than 16 regulation barges and not to exceed 3 wide. Tow sizes through the navigation pass are: Down-bound tow maximum dimensions are 175 feet by 1,200 feet, including the towboat, with no more than 25 regulation barges and not to exceed 5 wide.  No hip barges or other deviation that could degrade normal steerage characteristics are allowed for down-bound tows.  Up-bound tow maximum dimensions are 140 feet by 1,600 feet including the towboat, with no more than 28 regulation barges and not to exceed 4 wide.  Up-bound tows shall have adequate power to maintain speed.

MILE 973.2 - DOCK REPAIR

Continuing until approximately July 1, 2022, from 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., each day, dock repair operations are being conducted in the vicinity of Mile 973.2, RDB.  Mariners are urged to transit the area at their slowest safe speed to minimize their wake and proceed with caution.  Mariners may contact the M/V JIM BURNS will monitor VHF-FM Channel 16 or 68, for additional information.
