Old River Lock: Forebay Dredging Operations (Update)

Reference Navigation Bulletin No. 23-130, dated 20 October 2023, stating that commencing on or about 26 October 2023 and continuing until further notice, the U.S. Government Contract Cutterhead Dredge EMIL KURTZ will perform dredging operations at Old River Lock Forebay and work back towards Old River Lock.

MARINERS ARE ADVISED THAT BEGINNING AT 6:00 P.M. ON TUESDAY, 7 NOVEMBER 2023, OLD RIVER LOCK WILL BE CLOSED TO NAVIGATION FOR APPROXIMATELY 24 HOURS FOR THE U.S. GOVERNMENT CONTRACT CUTTERHEAD DREDGE EMIL KURTZ TO WORK FROM STATION 50+00 TO 54+00 IN THE 75’ WIDTH CHANNEL NEXT TO THE FLOATING GUIDEWALL AND LOCK CHAMBER.

The Dredge will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and dredged material will be deposited into deep water in the Mississippi River via a floating pipeline. Besides dredging equipment, there are numerous work and support vessels associated with this operation.

Mariners should contact the Dredge on VHF marine channels 13 and 16, and the Old River Lock on VHF marine channel 14 when approaching the Old River Lock Forebay area.

Mariners are urged to transit at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made.
